Greetings to our new students¶
These pages contain useful information and advice for new students on the 2020 Applied Computational Science & Engineering course in the Department of Earth Science & Engineering at Imperial College London. Please read these pages carefully, starting with the tasks to perform before you arrive.
Before the course starts¶
Before the course starts on 5th October 2020, future ACSE students are expected to complete the following tasks:
Ensure you have and suitable computing and networking equipment and are familiar with its operation. See Computing Equipment for a minimum specification.
Organise your workspace ready for the start of lectures. See Remote Learning for tips
Create a new GitHub account with the pattern described here: The Github.com Website
Work through the Software Carpentry lectures on the bash command line. See The Command Line for more information and links
Work through the Software Carpentry lectures on git. See The git version control system for more information and links
Try to install supporting software as described in Software Installation. As a minimum, you will need Microsoft Teams installed on at least one device.
On the first day¶
On the 5th October at 9am BST, the first event will be a Teams meeting with the Course director, Dr. Gerard Gorman. A link to this meeting will be distributed in late September.
